Shopaholic. Impulse buy. Girl math. For decades, the language around women and money has painted us as emotional spenders instead of financial decision makers. Men's spending gets called an investment, a passion. Ours gets called a problem.

That language has consequences that start early. A UK study found that girls receive 20% less allowance than boys, and boys are more likely to get paid for "premium chores" like washing the car, while girls do unpaid dishes and table-clearing. Think about what that teaches a kid about what her work is worth.

Then we grow up and wonder why we second-guess ourselves. A global financial literacy study found that men outscored women in the majority of countries surveyed, but the gap isn't really about knowledge. It's about who was let into the conversation. Women earn 81 cents for every dollar men earn, save less than half as much and retire with 30% less. The reasons are built into a system of lower pay, career breaks taken for caregiving, and retirement benefits that reward long, uninterrupted, higher-earning careers. And yet, when women do invest, they tend to outperform men.

Some of you have been managing your own money, your own portfolios, maybe even other people's, for years. Some of you are just now working up the nerve to open a statement. All belong here.

Less than a century ago, women couldn't open a bank account without a husband's signature. That changed in 1974. We've come a long way, but closing the gaps won't happen by accident. So, on November 2, Poppy Candid presents "Worth It," a conversation about money with Elena Neely, Nafasi Ferrell and Rebecca Angel-Feuer, three women who help people build wealth, heal their relationship with money and actually use what they have.

Bring your questions. Bring your numbers. You're worth this conversation.
